| Star Volunteer - 1000 hearts for 1000 minds Fariha Naveed is a Girls For a Change superstar! She has been volunteering with Girls for a Change for 2 semester-long sessions now and has been one of the program’s biggest advocates. Fariha volunteers at Fisher Middle School in San Jose, where she dedicates an hour and a half once a week for 14 weeks to help empower girls’ voices and show that they can change things in their community. Her students absolutely adore her and her warm personality provides a trusting space for them to share what they want to change about their community.Girls for a Change has been absolutely blessed by having Fariha as a volunteer. She not only does the weekly girl meetings but she has also been a major advocate for the program and 1000 Hearts for 1000 Minds at her employer, Brocade, bringing in several others to volunteer with Girls for a Change. On top of all of that, Fariha is helping Girls for a Change with its new program in Afghanistan. Girls for a Change is so lucky to have her! ![]() |

| #NotBuyingIt Over the past year Girls for A Change has partnered with Jennifer Siebel Newsom in creating and leading the social action component of her award winning documentary Miss Representation. As part of the Social Action Rep. program, we created a campaign called "Not Buying It," which encourages people to use the Twitter hashtag #NotBuyingIt to call out sexist and degrading representations of women in the media, especially in commercials and print advertisements. Respected independent news organization Mother Jones has picked up the story and reports on the popularity of #NotBuyingIt during this year's Super Bowl. Click here to read the story. ![]() |

Girls For A Change is excited to be partnering with GroundSpark on a new, cutting edge film and educational campaign about teens, gender and sexuality: Straightlaced–How Gender’s Got Us All Tied Up. From girls confronting media messages about culture and body image to boys who are sexually active just to prove they aren’t gay, Straightlaced shares young people’s brave and intimate stories about the toll that deeply held stereotypes and rigid gender policing have on all our lives.
