Girl Action Team Projects in Houston
Edison Middle School – Edison Goes Green!Edison’s girls were sick of seeing a littered school environment and a lack of resources for proper recycling of waste. They decided to increase recycling on campus, and help Edison become greener. The school currently has only one paper recycling bin that it is not utilized to its greatest potential, and much of the garbage the school generates is recyclable paper. Working with school administrators, the school district and local recycling vendors, the girls are leading a campaign to place individual recycling bins in each classroom and office and to work out a system through which paper can be delivered to the large recycling bin in the back of the school. They planned to get approval before the end of school and start implementation by next school year at the latest.

Girl Action Team Projects in El Paso
Paso del Norte Middle School in El Paso, TX
The girls at Paso del Norte Middle School in El Paso, TX decided that bullying would be their community issue. They felt it would be an important issue to tackle because it is so prevalent in schools and the bullying rate is higher in middle school. The girls decided the root cause that had the biggest impact on people bully was because of others’ differences. They decided that they would create a newspaper that addresses bullying. Students can then spread awareness of what bullying is, including making fun of people for their differences. There will also be a section that will promote being yourself and the positive aspects of being unique and that those aspects about people should be celebrated, not mocked. The girls wrote their first issue of the newspaper and it was released on February 28th at their school!
