Girl Action Team Projects in Philadelphia
Hope Charter School – Beauty Through Our EyesThe girls at Hope Charter School wanted to challenge their peers to look at beauty through a different lens. They discussed how beauty is portrayed in the media and how that impacts their everyday lives. The group decided to construct a series of life size collages to create a visual display of the many elements of beauty, positive images of women and girls and positive messages of self worth. The collages were then framed and posted around the school. The team believed that by creating their own source of media through the collages, youth will start to challenge the views of popular culture and be exposed to a different definition of beauty where it is not one particular size, complexion, or style.
