APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 31, 2017 ($25 fee)

High school girls will experience a 10-day program exploring the behind the scenes of the fashion industry as they learn about trend forecasting, career and internship options, skills building, networking and meeting fashion leaders from around the globe. Girls will visit New York City for five days and spend the remaining five days at Virginia Commonwealth University exploring their passion for fashion through the Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising. As a bonus, the girls' creative solo and team projects developed will be presented at a showcase at the end of the program.

It’s no secret that the fashion industry has a diversity problem with very few women of color on magazine covers, campaigns, gracing runways or landing leadership roles in the industry.

Girls For A Change is breaking barriers and creating opportunities in the world of fashion as we inspire the creative and resourceful fashion leader in your girl through exposure to this hands on fashion-focused summer residency.

The transition to middle school is often challenging for Black girls and other girls of color due to massive fundamental achievement gaps. The supportive and hands-on environment of this camp strives to meet this challenge by fostering increased independence, self-esteem and confidence in girls through fun interactive experiences, workshops, taking part in Girl Action Teams, learning from guest speakers, and field trips.

This two-week residential program will develop the skills and capabilities that will enable girls to speak up in class and social settings, solve problems creatively and communicate with confidence that will invigorate the leadership potential in all girls. Ultimately, this skill building is expected to significantly contribute to girls gaining leadership positions at an early age.

Let Her Lead: A High School Girls Experience

· FOR: Girls in 9th -12th grades

· TYPE: Residential Program

· DATES: July 16, 2017 - July 28, 2017

· COST: $1,400 (Full/Partial scholarships available)

This two-week camp is designed specifically for Black high school girls and other girls of color who have big dreams for their lives and careers. During this experience, we celebrate stories and successes of women of color; actively engage girls in workshops, projects, college tours and mock college classes; and introduce girls to the inner workings of government, business, and entrepreneurship. Girls are also given opportunities to secure internships and jobs, receive intentional coaching to enhance their understanding of networks, and plan their future career success.

Despite the great strides African American women have made in education, many continue to experience higher rates of unemployment than white women. Additionally, Black women earn less than their male counterparts and white women, leaving a growing portion of our population more vulnerable to poverty and its implications.

Let Her Lead focuses on addressing these issues, and moves Black girls from stuck to soaring! We help girls embrace who they uniquely are and realize their infinite potential.
