07-08 GFC Phoenix IT Girl: Yvonne Watterson
Every year GFC recognizes a social change maker from the community with the GFC IT Girl award. This year, Gateway Early College High School Principal Yvonne Watterson is our IT Girl for her support of all students.
Yvonne Watterson was born and raised in Northern Ireland. She graduated from Queen’s University of Belfast with an honors degree in English and Education. She began her career as an English teacher in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and like so many Irish people, she was drawn to the dream of America. She arrived in the United States in 1987, where she eventually found work as a substitute teacher in the Madison School District. She has held various teaching and administrative positions at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels.
Active in the community, Yvonne was instrumental in bringing Girls For A Change to Phoenix and has served on the Advisory Board. Any extra time, is devoted to supporting the continued education of undocumented children of immigrants. When Arizona's Proposition 300 passed, Yvonne was no longer able to us
e her state funding to pay for the college classes that are integral to her Early College program for these students. She sprang into advocacy mode, and has singlehandedly raised almost $100,000 in private donations to support the cost of out-of-state tuition for the undocumented students at her school. She reminded the students of the importance of saying ‘thank you’ for these donations, and so they wrote letters – anonymously – to express their gratitude to the kindness of strangers. As the stack of letters grew higher on her desk, she realized that these were not just thank you notes, they were, in fact, the documented dreams of undocumented students. In partnership with the Hispanic Institute of Social Issues, she compiled the letters in a book Documented Dreams – not as something to sell, but as a tangible expression of thanks.
For her advocacy for those who cannot speak up for themselves, Yvonne received the City of Phoenix 2008 MLK Living the Dream award, the 2008 Hispanic Administrators Association Principal’s Courage award, and most recently the 2008 NAU Martin-Springer Institute Moral Courage Award.
