Calling all Divas!

Summer is almost here, which means another awesome year of Camp Diva Leadership Academy! We’re back for another 9 weeks of sisterhood and immersion for rising 1st– 8th-grade girls in our Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) Lab. Our theme this year? MakeHer Space: Hands on Learning by Making.

Camp Diva is a 9 week-long full-day camp providing girls in rising 1st - 8th grades with a crucial opportunity - hands-on experience exploring the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Why Camp Diva is Awesome

As our girls are immersed in these subjects, they begin to understand that girls, too, can be pioneers in these areas. Girls will spend each day learning with state of the art machinery including 3D Printers, programming, vinyl cutters, laser engravers, sewing, Raspberry Pi’s, robots, and more.

Each day will focus on one concentration. Women working in these fields will host lectures each morning and campers will spend the afternoons participating in hands-on activities related to the day’s topic.

Last year, volunteer chef Sequoia Ross taught cooking at Camp Diva, introducing new foods and preparation methods to the girls each month. After her lessons, parents reported that the girls were more eager to help prepare meals at home, inspiring Ms. Ross to return. “I will be coming back for sure,” she said. “I look forward to meeting new girls and having the returning girls assist me when I teach.”

As a "woman in tech" in the Richmond area, Akela Silkman was thrilled for the opportunity to act as a model for the girls for pursuing and persevering in technology. After her collaborative lessons, she noticed a shift in perspective about working in technology not only from campers, but their parents as well.

“It was especially meaningful for me to work to expand the girl's mindsets and empower their thinking about the possibilities and, most importantly, their capabilities in the tech industry,” Ms. Silkman shared. “I especially enjoyed watching the way the girl's faces lit up when they successfully developed a line of code to accomplish various Robotics Challenges. My hope is that the girls left Camp Diva with new exposure to a field/industry that they previously felt was out of reach-- and to have opened new possibilities for their bright future!”

Camp counselor Diamonique Anderson also witnessed the girls’ transformation firsthand, watching them form bonds, discover new possibilities, and explore potential careers together. “Campers gained a better understanding of themselves and broadened their spectrums to all of the different things they could do,” she said. After participating in a fashion camp at VCU, Anderson noticed how the girls began to envision themselves as models, owning their own boutiques, designers, and stylists.

After participating in a Financial Literacy Course with Sylvia Watford, an accountant at Virginia Credit Union, some of the girls shared their hopes of becoming accountants, or even owning their own bank someday!

In addition to our focused STEAM programming and traditional camp activities, girls will experience diverse weekly themes focused on areas such as visual arts, health & wellness, financial literacy, green living, character development, leadership skills, and fun-filled weekly field trips. They’ll also have access to many different environments for learning, including coworking spaces, computer labs, and self-service activities, all while building confidence and relationships that will last a lifetime.

There are many benefits to attending Camp Diva Leadership Academy.

  • Safe, Affordable, and Convenient for working families

  • Girls lead their own exploration of STEAM programs

  • Girls participate in activities that develop their social-emotional skills

  • Girls improve sisterhood through sustained engagement with female peers and mentors

Simply put, Girls For A Change teaches girls that they have enormous potential and there is power in being a girl growing into her womanhood.

Here’s what our girls (and a few of their parents) have to say!

“Before this camp, I was kinda scared to speak up for my opinion, and this camp has helped me with that”

“Us sisters can come to each other for anything, and if we have a problem, we can solve it.”

“It has empowered (my daughter). She has a shy trait, but with her being around other females and Angela, it gives her an example to follow out in the community.”

“I feel like I can be more confident in myself, and I can stand up for myself.”

“It made a believer out of her. It lets her know the world is vast, there’s so much out there that you don’t know about yet.”
